DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT JOINING HDPE: MYTH #3 – FUSION IS FASTER

Posted on February 6, 2018

The process of fusing high density polyethylene (HDPE) is affected by no shortage of variables.  In the construction industry, this often translates into delays.  Even in ideal conditions, fusion is a slow process (up to 10x slower than mechanical joining – check out our video below).  We’re breaking down the factors that impact the time it takes to complete a fusion job vs. how those factors affect job that uses Refuse-to-Fuse™ mechanical joints.

Ways You’ll Run into Fusion Delays

Precipitation/Moisture & Wind

Precipitation means either taking time to set up a tent and protect fusion equipment and pipe or forgoing scheduled work and waiting until wet pipe is completely dry.  Wind can mean contamination and time-consuming rework.

Temperature

Hot days mean longer cooling times and setting up a tent for shade, while cold days mean longer pre-heating and soak times.

Terrain

Uneven or muddy terrain means unstable footing, which makes already-difficult fusing even more subject to challenges.

Location

Narrow trenches and tight spaces require taking time to maneuver a fusion machine into place or fusing elsewhere and moving the pipe into its place.  If pipe is required to be in a vertical orientation, in-situ fusion won’t be possible; instead pipe will have to be put in place post-fusion.

Skilled Labor

A shortage of skilled, certified installers or a crew made up of less experienced installers can slow you down – the art of fusion must be done right in order to be effective, durable, and long-lasting.  Fused joints that fall short must be cut out and done again – another major time-waster.

Special Equipment

The need for special equipment often equals downtime.  The cost of fusion machines may mean a limited number on a given project, and forward progress might be determined in part by machine availability.  If a fusion machine breaks, work comes to a standstill.

Why you should Refuse-to-Fuse

Precipitation/Moisture & Wind

No effect on time to joint completion.

Temperature

No effect on time to joint completion.

Terrain

No effect on time to joint completion.

Location

No effect on time to joint completion.

Skilled Labor

Not required for joint completion.

Special Equipment

Not required for joint completion.

In addition to being 10x faster than fusion, the Refuse-to-Fuse system can be installed wet and in rainy, snowy, or windy conditions, whether the air is hot or cold, on difficult terrain, in tight spaces and in any orientation, and by multiple crews working in parallel with limited training and simple tools.  Enough said!
